Roger Nelson For County Commissioner
Vote November 5
Addressing Pine County's Challenges
Pine County faces significant challenges, including substance abuse and mental health issues. While county government often addresses the fallout, we must focus on identifying and tackling the root causes. Additionally, I fully support the push for high-speed broadband, but I will not compromise the maintenance and improvement of our actual highways and gravel roads. Recent trends have leaned towards mere maintenance instead of necessary upgrades, especially with the local ½% sales tax designated for this purpose.
Keeping Taxes Low
It’s crucial to curb the rising county budget and tax levy, which have increased every year. With our population declining, we need to be more prudent with our resources. I believe in maximizing our current assets rather than continually seeking more funding from fewer residents—a sustainable approach is essential for our future.
Promoting Economic Development
To promote economic development in our county, we must broaden our focus beyond tourism and recreation. While they are important, we also need to attract stable, light manufacturing businesses. These industries will provide a solid economic base and support existing service-oriented businesses. I will advocate for practical solutions, including TIF assistance, addressing zoning issues, and enhancing infrastructure to create a thriving economic environment.
Priorities as a County Commissioner
Listen.
Listening to the community is paramount. I want to ensure that everyone feels heard and valued. Your perspectives matter, and I’m here to engage in meaningful conversations.
Learn.
Learning is essential for informed decision-making. My educational background, including a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, equips me to tackle the complexities of county governance effectively. I commit to researching issues thoroughly and understanding all sides.
Lead.
Leading means building consensus among board members while standing firm on what I believe is right, fair, and just.
Meet Roger
Lifelong Resident
I am deeply connected to this community, where I’ve spent most of my life. From childhood to raising a family and running a small business, my experiences here have shaped who I am today. My wife, Judy, is a dedicated teacher at Hinckley Elementary, and together we have four wonderful adult children.
Work & Volunteer Experience
I proudly own and operate Crooked Creek Farms, located east of Hinckley, alongside our son Jonathan. I also hold a state license for septic design and inspections. My commitment to public service includes over 15 years on the Hinckley/Finlayson School Board and the Pine County Board of Commissioners. Currently, I volunteer with the children’s program at our church and serve on the leadership council. Additionally, I’m a board member of the Tri-County Cattlemen’s Association, where I continue to give back to our community.
Education
Since my previous experience as a county commissioner, I completed my undergraduate degree in Business and then completed a Master’s Degree in Public Administration, which provides an invaluable knowledge base when faced with the many facets of county government.
